It all began when a diverse group of professionals, including computer scientists, craft experts, and anthropologists, gathered in March in Heraklion, Crete to kick off the CRAEFT project. Over a few days, we planted the initial seeds of this ambitious endeavor, where each partner’s unique knowledge and experience would contribute to a deeper understanding of craftsmanship and the development of innovative solutions for safeguarding and transmitting know-how.
This strong team was later reunited in the glass school Cerfav, France, eager to uncover the mysteries of glassmaking. Our mission started by capturing the gestures of glass blowing with a blowtorch and steel pipe. The experience, supported by computer science, went beyond the workshop walls. Together, we embraced the spotlight by going live on Twitch, turning this shared challenge into an opportunity to strengthen our bonds and overcome stage fright as a unified team.
Some of us then headed to Tinos, in Greece, eager to explore a marble carver’s workshop and to capture intriguing gestures and moments. Others added technological and anthropological contributions, or shared documentation and stories to enrich their recordings.
